We made a butterfly. Hope you enjoy.
Someone out there likes butterflies. I like to start with a pencil sketch.

After we are happy with the lines, it's time for "inking" the lines.

Look for places that'll need a bit of space and get that all marked out. This comes from experience, but the rough glass shouldn't be too tight. Allow space for the foil/came and give some wiggle room. On this piece, not so important, but if you need a panel to fit a specific space....just make sure the final part doesn't "grow" over spec.
Add additional info unless you just like puzzles. F1M2 means make 2 and flip one of them...the glass has a "face" side and a "back" side. You'll see if you look at the glass for a minute. Don't make two left sides!

Make copies! Make one copy on some thick card stock.

Scissors. That is the tool for cutting this apart. If scissors are giving you crap in any way, then you'll hate the glass cutter. If it's too tight for the scissors, just look at modifying your design.
Cut the big parts then "shave" the margins off. You should be done with the design work now. Put your markers away, clean up all the trash. Put the parts and the templates into a project folder or box and get ready to pick colors.

This will be the "palette" that we will "paint" the piece with.

I'll also take some time here and mirror the wing and get it looking right. Use a light box on a copy, cut that copy to fit as a mirror on the original, then copy that whole mess to get the "final" working copies.

Use the templates and silver/gold/black Sharpies to outline the parts.
